Check out the trailer for this big, cooperative Halo campaign mod-
A just-announced Halo: The Master Chief Collection mod project is working on a full singleplayer and cooperative campaign in the style of Halo: CE and Halo 2, and has released a trailer, statement, and screenshots that are pretty promising.
The trailer does some flyover shots of what might be the destroyed colony world of Reach before transitioning to the familiar environment of the Halo ring, then showing off some unique takes on the older covenant alien designs.
The RedShift team, a seven person group called Blimp Brigade, described their project like this on ModDB:
“RedShift is a large open-ended Halo campaign that can be played either solo or cooperatively with up to 4 players. This is a brand-new campaign. All of our levels are being made from the ground up, with …

Read moreJapanese government commissions baffling metaverse to combat loneliness where you can’t talk to anyone, enforced via a digital security guard-
Feeling lonely? How does driving a little pixel avatar around in a place you’re explicitly not allowed to talk to anybody in sound? Bad, probably, but that hasn’t stopped the Japanese government from making it.
As spotted (and translated) by Automaton West, the already ill-fated project goes by the name of “Platt-verse”, and is designed to strengthen “measures against loneliness and isolation”, as per its website. Noritoshi Furuichi, an author and sociologist, took it for a spin—and tore it apart in a tweet (the following quotes have been machine-translated).
“As soon as you log in,” writes Furuichi, “an avatar called ‘Security’ approaches you and tells you to turn on silent mode. They’re watching over users to make sure they don’t talk to each other.”
This is co…
Read moreLegend recreates entire Radiohead album with Mario 64 sounds, even Jonny Greenwood likes it-
Radiohead is one of the great bands of our era and, depending on who you ask, In Rainbows is amongst its finest work. The album is especially memorable for appearing out of nowhere after the band had taken a hiatus of several years, and its innovative distribution: This was released as a pay-what-you-want download and, yes, you could give one of the world’s biggest bands $0 for their latest record if you wished.
Now the creator and composer On4Word has released a project called In Rainbow Roads (YouTube). It quite incredibly recreates the entire 43-minute album with the Super Mario 64 soundfont (a soundfont is essentially all the files used to create a given soundtrack), and I can only speculate at the amount of time that’s gone into this. The creator merely says it is “dedicated …
Read moreMicrosoft has partnered with one of my favourite controller manufacturers to make an accessible controller-
8BitDo originally caught my eye a few years ago thanks to its retro aesthetic and great battery life. However, its undeniable quality has kept me coming back to test out new products as they launch. The C64-themed mechanical keyboard looks excellent and the retro mechanical num pads are a cute oddity, whereas the Ultimate Bluetooth controller is a powerhouse with an excellent feel and great connectivity.
It seems I’m not the only one who is a fan of 8BitDo, as Microsoft has recently announced a unique partnership with the company, employing its talents in the new Lite SE Xbox controller. Entirely flat, with an included dongle for 2.4G wireless connectivity, it has two jacks at the top of the controller to plug in Super Buttons. These are big instantly programmable buttons wh…
Read moreOverwatch 2’s new Antarctic map has ice drills, fishing, and immortal penguins-
Overwatch 2’s new Antarctic Peninsula map will drop with the launch of season 3 on February 7, and in it, you can find penguins, snow, and a sort-of-functional ice fishing spot.
The Control map has three distinct points to capture: one that takes place in science labs, another that surrounds a mining drill, and a third on an icebreaker ship. Each of them are surrounded in natural paths made of ice and snow, which was a considerable challenge to make, according to its designers.
“We’re used to working on you know, sort of modular, street, city-based stuff that has a lot of like real world reference, that’s great to look at. All of a sudden, we say we’re gonna do Antarctica and you Google ‘Antarctic,’ and you go, oh, you know, that’s a problem,” level designer Trey Sp…
Read moreNetEase smashes up World of Warcraft statue after its nasty breakup with Blizzard-
Blizzard’s games have been published in China by NetEase for 14 years, a partnership that has been enormously successful for both companies. The Chinese publisher’s rapacious growth over the last decade was turbo-charged by the money it made from the games’ success and, while NetEase’s success can hardly be attributed solely to that, it is now one of the largest internet and videogame companies in the world.
But things have gone sour in a manner that, given the size of the respective companies, can only be called hilariously petty.
It was announced late last year that the Blizzard-NetEase deal would not be renewed. This sparked a minor war of words between the companies and, last week, Blizzard blamed NetEase for the problems after it refused to agree to a six month e…
Read moreRTX 4090 prices in US tick upwards as China ban approaches-
At first glance, our story earlier this week about the imminent RTX 4090 export ban seems like something only China has to worry about. But not so fast. It could have an impact closer to home.
Tom’s Hardware reports that RTX 4090 prices are going haywire in China, with supplies drying up and the few that are available now doubling in price. Back home, there are already signs that the rush to bag RTX 4090s in China before the ban kicks in next month could be pushing prices up.
The cheapest RTX on Newegg as we write these words is this Zotac item for $1,699, well above the $1,599 MSRP set by Nvidia. Incidentally, the RTX 4090 is currently out of stock on Nvidia’s store.
The next cheapest 4090 on Newegg is a $1,729 MSI card. It’s similar situation on Amazon, with the chea…
Read moreRespawn finally comments on Apex cheating scandal that saw pro players’ games hijacked, basically says nothing at all-
Last weekend the North American finals of the Apex Legends Global Series was abruptly called off after two players suffered mid-match hacks that enabled cheating software. The word is that this was down to a remote code execution (RCE) exploit, a particularly nasty form of intrusion that’s such bad news that Easy Anti Cheat (used in Apex) was stung to issue its own rebuttal asserting “there is no RCE vulnerability” in its software.
Easy Anti-Cheat got out of the gate before EA and Respawn, but the Apex developer has finally commented on the incident. Not that it’s saying much.
“On Sunday, a few professional Apex Legends player accounts were hacked during an ALGS event, ” says a Respawn statement. “Game and player security are our highest priorities, whic…
